The Large Hadron Supercollider (LHC) located at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator. It was in planning since the 1970s, and first powered up in September 2009. In 2012, the discovery of the Higgs Boson, which explains why particles have mass, took place at CERN using the LHC. The Higgs Boson discovery plays an integral part in the plot of my novel, Zero Point Ascension. By smashing protons and heavy ions at near-light speeds, the LHC recreates high-energy conditions that existed billionths of a second after the Big Bang.
